Oracle cards are the modern version of a divinatory tool that humans have used for time immemorial. Where our ancestors divined the world through bones and stars, I divine through cards and words. They are an indispensable companion for the seekers of the worlds beyond worlds, the seekers of magic.
I use oracle cards for readings, for connecting to the higher realms, for healing work; for prayer, for ceremony, for creating sacred space, and to have in my hands heavenly drops of artistic beauty, manifestations of the Divine brought through the skilled artistry of human hands.
I often get accused of having “too many” of these cards, which, from a rational point of view, may well be correct. But oh if my accuser only knew the worlds I journey to through each card, oceans of them would not be enough.
I know I have both DNA ancestry and soul history of prophecy. Once upon a time a traveller through the Yorkshire dales would have found my great-grandmother nestled in the corner of the local pub, peering at the tea leaves in her cup or shuffling the playing cards on her table, ready to earn a few extra pennies for her family, and deliver messages of destiny to the queue that formed to the door. I like to think she’s smiling at her great grand-progeny that followed in her footsteps, albeit sans the brewery. I wonder on cold wintry nights whether she would happily swap places with me to sit in my warm cosy room and read for online sitters. I know when technology makes my head spin, I would happily trade with her, planting myself, steaming tea in hand (with a shot of brandy perhaps?) next to the open fire and bustle of humans.
My soul history is also littered with prophecy. I have lived many lives as a Seer. I have journeyed to a time where an aquamarine crystal adorned my forehead, ready to amplify the power of the third eye. Here, my portends of the future helped navigate the present of my brethren. In another life, I used trees and plants for divination, where nature told me her secrets and I knew all about the stars and their connection to our cycles, even as an illiterate. I would bring this knowledge back to my tribe for healing work and medicine.
Each time I shuffle a deck I feel this ancestral line that stretches out behind me, and the future line that stretches ahead of me. Scores of men and women who choose and have chosen a divinatory path. The Seers of the world. I have no doubt that whatever route my life had taken, a divination tool would have been close at hand.
Oracle cards bring the enchanted back to life. Each oracle card is a mini witch or wizard and they are magic itself. I feel the resonance in each one, I feel the spirit that worked with the artist to create them. I journey with them into unseen lands and anchor in their wisdom through words. They are the Divine manifested in a piece of card and they are an extension of me. I am the Goddess of the Oracle card.
